Everyone’s doing season previews — but we’re doing something different. The
Captains’ Code is all about what really makes or breaks an NFL team. It’s not just about rosters or vibes. It’s about the identity, the pressure points, the bold calls, and the one thing that could send everything crashing down… or finally take them over the top. No filler. Just straight-up football breakdowns that tell you what actually matters heading into 2025.
The X-Factor That Will Make or Break This Season
EDGE D.J. Wonnum. Carolina finished dead last in pressure rate (25.3%) last season, though they jumped to 21st (29%) once Wonnum returned from injury in Week 10. With Jadeveon Clowney gone, the Panthers rebuilt their edge room—signing Patrick Jones II and drafting Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen. Carolina desperately needs Wonnum to stabilize the group. He posted 8 sacks and 15 QB hits with the Vikings in 2023; if he can get back to that form, it raises the floor and keeps the rookies from being thrown into the fire too soon.
Last Year’s Numbers:
In the 2024 NFL regular season, the Carolina Panthers offense struggled, particularly in passing, ranking 30th in passing yards per game with 187.5. They ranked 18th in rushing yards per game with 110.5. Overall, the Panthers ranked low in total offense, with 298.0 total yards per game. Defensively, the Panthers had a very difficult season, allowing an NFL record 534 points. They ranked last in the NFL in points allowed, total yards allowed, and rushing yards allowed. Their passing defense was slightly better, ranking 23rd in yards surrendered, but they gave up the most passing touchdowns.
Key Player(s) to Watch: The Heroes and the Wild Cards
WR Xavier Legette. Bryce Young needs him to take the next step. Legette flashed big-play potential as a rookie but also posted a 14% drop rate, third-worst in the NFL. His biggest miss? He’s been working on catching with his hands this offseason, and with rookie Tetairoa McMillan pushing for snaps, Legette has to respond.
Coaching: What’s Different This Year?
Head Coach: Dave Canales stays put
Defensive Coordinator: Ejiro Evero remains
Secondary Coach: Renaldo Hill hired
Outside LBs Coach: A.C. Carter hired
New offensive assistant: Keyshawn Colmon
The Bold Prediction
Bryce Young has a career year and keeps Carolina relevant in the NFC South race.
The Realistic Win Total & Why
7–10. The offense should improve, but unless the defense takes a real leap, the Panthers are still a year away from seriously contending.
The Biggest Question Mark Heading Into 2025
Can this defense step up and give Bryce Young a chance to win games late?
My Takeaway
Carolina’s young core is taking shape, and Young has the tools around him to look the part of a franchise QB. But the season comes down to the pass rush. If Wonnum and the rookies click, they’ll make noise. If not, they’ll be stuck in the same spot as last year—scrapping to stay relevant.
This is a really interesting way to look at teams. I think the panthers are underrated this year. Just did a preview on my page as well if you want to check it out.
