Everyone’s doing season previews — but we’re doing something different. The
Captains’ Code is all about what really makes or breaks an NFL team. It’s not just about rosters or vibes. It’s about the identity, the pressure points, the bold calls, and the one thing that could send everything crashing down… or finally take them over the top. No filler. Just straight-up football breakdowns that tell you what actually matters heading into 2025.
The X-Factor That Will Make or Break This Season
Minnesota Vikings: Jordan Mason
Everyone knows J.J. McCarthy is the X-factor in Minnesota. But I don’t want to state the obvious. The Vikings quietly added Mason via trade with the 49ers. Mason was the backup in San Francisco. Aaron Jones is still the clear starter in the backfield, but he’s getting old, and Kevin McConnell loves Mason's physical approach. The run game could be pivotal here.
Last Year’s Numbers:
In the 2024 NFL regular season, the Minnesota Vikings offense was a strong unit, ranking 9th in points scored per game with 25.4. They ranked 6th in passing yards per game with 237.8, and 19th in rushing yards per game with 109.1. Overall, the Vikings offense ranked 12th in total yards per game with 346.9. Defensively, the Minnesota Vikings were also strong, ranking 5th in points allowed per game with 19.5 and 16th in total yards allowed per game. They excelled against the run, allowing only 93.41 rushing yards per game, ranking 2nd overall. Their pass defense was less effective, ranking 28th by allowing 242.0 opponent passing yards per game. The Vikings' defense recorded 49 sacks and led the league with 24 interceptions. This strong performance on both sides of the ball contributed to their impressive +12 turnover differential, which ranked tied for 3rd overall in the league.
Key Player(s) to Watch: The Heroes and the Wild Cards
QB Sam Howell.
While we all watch McCarthy, Howell also deserves a couple of looks. He was acquired on draft day and enters training camp as the No. 2 guy in the QB room, but that role is more important when you’re behind a guy that doesn’t have a lot of NFL experience.
Coaching: What’s Different This Year?
Kevin O’Connell signed a contract extension after guiding Minnesota to a 14-win season. On staff, the Vikings hired Shaun Sarrett as assistant offensive line coach and Henry Schneider IV as assistant to the head coach. Otherwise, they return most of their key leadership group, including defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
The Bold Prediction
The Vikings fall off a cliff, finishing with just 4 wins. McCarthy is a massive question mark, and if he falters or gets hurt, Sam Howell is far from a reliable fallback. Without strong quarterback play, it won’t matter how elite the defense is, the Vikings’ offense simply won’t keep up.
The Realistic Win Total & Why
4-13.
It’s a harsh projection, but the NFC North is too competitive to give Minnesota the benefit of the doubt with a rookie QB and a shaky backup plan.
The Biggest Question Mark Heading Into 2025
Can Brian Flores make the cornerback room work?
My Takeaway
This year really hinges on how J.J. McCarthy can play. I don’t believe in McCarthy, and in a really competitive NFC North, it’s going to be tough for a “mediocre” team like the Vikings to succeed. Do I believe in this team this year? No. Could they be extremely successful? Absolutely.
Now Howell's traded 😭
