Everyone’s doing season previews — but we’re doing something different. The
Captains’ Code is all about what really makes or breaks an NFL team. It’s not just about rosters or vibes. It’s about the identity, the pressure points, the bold calls, and the one thing that could send everything crashing down… or finally take them over the top. No filler. Just straight-up football breakdowns that tell you what actually matters heading into 2025.
The X-Factor That Will Make or Break This Season
This offensive line really has to step it up this season. Will Campbell is going to my pick here. He was selected by the Patriots fourth overall in the 2025 NFL draft. His offensive line last year ranked 31st in pass block win rate. Campbell was selected to protected the developing Drake Maye, and he has to do his job if the Patriots want to go anywhere this year.
Last Year’s Numbers:
In the 2024 NFL regular season, the New England Patriots offense ranked among the bottom of the league, finishing 30th in points scored per game with 17.0, 32nd (last) in passing yards per game with 196.6, and 31st in total yards per game with 292.0. They had a relatively better performance in rushing, ranking 13th in rushing yards per game with 115.8. On the defensive side, the Patriots allowed 24.5 points per game (22nd) and ranked 22nd in total yards allowed per game with 342.88. They were stronger against the pass, ranking 10th in passing yards allowed per game (211.53), but weaker against the run, ranking 23rd in rushing yards allowed per game (131.35). The team's defense recorded 28 sacks (32nd) and 7 interceptions (26th). Overall, the Patriots had a turnover differential of –11, tied for 28th in the league.
Key Player(s) to Watch: The Heroes and the Wild Cards
Drake Maye, Stefon Diggs, and Milton Williams are the players you need to watch on the Patriots. Maye finished 17th in QBR, with his top guy being Hunter Henry. On the other hand, Dak Prescott (yes, I know he only played 8 games, but still), finished with the 4th worst QBR even though he has receivers like Ceedee Lamb. According to a couple of sites, when Stefon Diggs was there during the spring practices, he was always slotted up as the #1 guy. Diggs could really help Maye progress. Finally, the Patriots outbid everyone to land Milton Williams. Pair him up with Christian Barmore, and quarterbacks should be extremely scared.
Coaching: What’s Different This Year?
The New England Patriots made several coaching changes after the 2024 season, hiring Mike Vrabel as head coach and bringing back Josh McDaniels for his third stint as offensive coordinator. Terrell Williams was named defensive coordinator, while Doug Marrone joined as offensive line coach, Thomas Brown as tight ends/passing game coordinator, and Todd Downing as wide receivers coach. Ben McAdoo transitioned to a senior defensive assistant role. The team also added John Streicher as vice president of football operations and strategy, and Frank Piraino as director of sports performance.
The Bold Prediction
I am a very strong believer in the Patriots this year. I personally believe that the Patriots will be able to finish with 10 wins this season and make the playoffs. This is going to be the year Drake Maye takes a huge step forward, and their draft picks are really gonna pan out.
The Realistic Win Total & Why
10-7. The Pats got a new coach in Mike Vrabel. They signed Milton Williams. Keion White can be huge. Harold Landry has 31.5 sacks in his past three seasons. They have a second-team All-Pro corner in Christian Gonzalez. This is going to be a hell of a team.
The Biggest Question Mark Heading Into 2025
Is There Enough Wide Receiver Talent?
My Takeaway
To me, the Patriots already look like a playoff team, but if they want any chance of winning, the wide receiver room really has to show up. Otherwise, this Patriots team is very interesting.
