WELCOME TO OUR FIRST OF MANY GUEST POSTS IN THIS SERIES. THANK YOU
FROM THE !Everyone’s doing season previews — but we’re doing something different. The
Captains’ Code is all about what really makes or breaks an NFL team. It’s not just about rosters or vibes. It’s about the identity, the pressure points, the bold calls, and the one thing that could send everything crashing down… or finally take them over the top. No filler. Just straight-up football breakdowns that tell you what actually matters heading into 2025.
The X-Factor That Will Make or Break This Season
Wide receiver chemistry. With Travis Kelce entering Year 12 and defenses fully keyed in on him, it’s up to KC’s young WRs to create separation — literally and figuratively. If Xavier Worthy - with his Olympic-calibre speed - and Rashee Rice - if he avoids a suspension and recovers from his groin injury - can stretch defenses and earn Patrick Mahomes' trust.. If not? Expect closer margins and tougher games across the board.
Last Year’s Numbers:
In the 2024 NFL regular season, the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense ranked in the middle of the league in most key statistical categories. They finished 15th in points scored per game with 22.6, 14th in passing yards per game with 222.4, and 22nd in rushing yards per game with 105.3. Overall, the Chiefs ranked 16th in total yards per game, averaging 327.6. Defensively, Kansas City was a strong unit, ranking 4th in points allowed per game with 19.2 and 9th in total yards allowed per game. They were particularly good against the run, ranking 8th by allowing 101.8 rushing yards per game, but were less effective against the pass, ranking 18th in opponent passing yards allowed per game. The Chiefs' defense registered 39 sacks and recorded 13 interceptions. Their turnover differential was +6, ranking them tied for 10th overall.
Key Player(s) to Watch: The Heroes and the Wild Cards
There are two keys for me, one on either side of the ball. QB Mahomes is the obvious hero on offense and is the heartbeat of Andy Reid’s side. He’s spoken of wanting to improve himself and the side generally since the Super Bowl humiliation in February and if he plays with a chip on his shoulder, look out. On defense, Trent McDuffie is the Chiefs wildcard ready to jump into shutdown territory. If he can lock down the opposing WR1 in big games, Steve Spagnuolo’s defense, ranked fourth overall in terms of points allowed last season, could be special once again.
Coaching: What’s Different This Year?
Same names, new mission: legacy. Andy Reid, Matt Nagy and Spagnuolo return to the most senior roles along with every major position group lead coach, providing continuity on both sides of the ball. But the locker room tone has shifted – this isn’t just a team chasing wins in 2025, it’s a dynasty chasing history. With whispers of Reid potentially eyeing retirement and stars like Kelce and Chris Jones also getting toward the end of their playing days, this team knows the window is still open but it won’t last forever.
The Bold Prediction
They won’t be the No.1 seed like they have been in four of the last seven years, but they’ll still be in the AFC Championship game. The Chiefs have a tough start, facing the Eagles, Ravens, Lions, Commanders and Bills all before the end of Week Nine. But the back half of their schedule looks much more favourable and I expect them to make the play-offs comfortably. Come play-off time, Mahomes can turn it on like nobody else in the league and the defense will stiffen. But they won’t get past Buffalo or Baltimore to make the Super Bowl.
The Realistic Win Total & Why
12-5.
They will lose a few games early on thanks to a tough schedule, but can finish strong with experience counting for a lot down the stretch. There will be a slip-up here or there - but nothing fatal to their play-off chances.
The Biggest Question Mark Heading Into 2025
Can this wide receiver group grow up fast enough?
My Takeaway
You might not think it after the way last season ended. But if Mahomes is healthy and has just enough help, this is still his league.
Chiefs fan appreciates this!!! I feel like I always come into the season with realistic/pessimistic view of the season…I think the Chiefs biggest concern this year will end up being the Broncos from within the division. Will certainly split those games! Chargers will be mediocre and the Raiders will be the Raiders. I doubt the Chiefs get the Bye and we shall see how the division goes in the end?! 🤷🏻♂️
My gut still favors them, to do well. Kelsey is refocused and Mahomes is still elite, but this is their last time through as a group I think.
